Many days/nights of rain have filled our dams, waterways and tanks. While the rain was most certainly welcome and needed, sometimes it gets in where it is NOT needed. If you have experienced water damage to any of your possessions, here are some top tips for cleaning up…

  1. If the water is near any electrical equipment, turn off the power, and make sure the area is safe before entering. If unsure, call a licensed electrician. When it is safe to do so, disconnect the electrical equipment and remove from the affected area. Generally electronics will not work after water inundation, and all testing and repairs, should be carried out by a licensed electrician.
  2. Remove all items from water as soon as safe. Separate items that can be saved from those that can’t. Items that can be saved should be washed and disinfected where at all possible. This will minimise the risk of mould growing on these items. Dry items thoroughly.
  3. Remove all water from the area. Stagnant pools of water are great mosquito breeding grounds. Also much prized by cane toads.
  4. Has the water gone over carpet? Sometimes carpet can be saved by washing and drying, however underlay tends to act like a huge sponge and cannot usually be saved. Carpet may shrink after getting wet so may be best used as floor mats instead.
  5. If walls are wet they will need to dry out. Wet plasterboard can dry out, but insulation in walls also acts like a sponge and will need to be removed or you risk mould growing in your walls. Mould has been linked to allergies and other health issues.
  6. Get dry air circulating as soon as possible to dry out all surfaces and items.
  7. Can you claim on insurance? Was it a flood event and do you have flood cover?
